Language Exchange at Tico Lingo in Heredia, Costa Rica

Our Students

At Tico Lingo, we’ve had the privilege of teaching students ranging from the age of 5 to 81, hailing from every corner of the globe. For some, Spanish is their second language; for others, it’s their fourth or fifth. Costa Rica might be their first international adventure or just another stop on an epic journey around the world.

Despite their differences in age, nationality, language background, and travel experience, every student walks through our doors driven by a shared passion for the Spanish language and a deep curiosity about Costa Rican culture. Over the weeks they spend with us, they don’t just learn—they become part of our community. They leave not only as confident Spanish speakers but also as cultural ambassadors, carrying with them the flavors, traditions, and warmth of Costa Rica.

From the moment they picked me up from the airport until it was time to leave, everyone at Tico Lingo was super friendly and helpful. Heredia is a great home base because there aren’t a lot of tourists so I was able to talk with locals and practice my Spanish every day. I took group classes with Kevin for two weeks and he was fantastic. His style was very relaxed and interactive and he adapted his lessons to our level in such a way that I was immediately able to apply what I learned to conversations in Spanish. We learned a lot and laughed a lot. If you come, I highly recommend staying with a local family. My “familia tica” were so friendly and helpful, providing countless opportunities to have discussions on all sorts of topics in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. I learned so much about the culture and daily life in Costa Rica, in addition to the casual Spanish phrases used every day at home that aren’t really taught in school. For me, this is what really sets Tico Lingo apart from other Spanish schools and added so much to the overall experience in Costa Rica.

We arrived at Tico Lingo knowing only a few words in Spanish. We are a couple in our 70's and came with trepidation in the immersion process. While the initial classes were very challenging in the first few days, at the end of our 2 week program, we were pleasantly surprised at our progress. Our professor Freddy gave us an excellent foundation on which to practice and build in order to write and speak with proper structure. The communication with staff before, during and after our stay was first rate. Their responses and interactions were prompt, complete, and personable. Our stay with our host family greatly enhanced our learning experience and also provided opportunities to practice our Spanish in typical everyday activities. We feel that our homestay was an integral part of our total immersion experience and would highly recommend that students take this path. We were very impressed with the school at Tico Lingo and highly recommend it for learning the language and experiencing the culture of Costa Rica.

This is an amazing school! The instructor I had was extremely knowledgeable, interesting and we had lots of fun. Classes are small and the students are tested ahead of time so their Spanish level is appropriate to the material presented. The staff at Tico Lingo are friendly, professional and so helpful. I am so glad I was fortunate to be able to attend. My homestay experience was fantastic and their were activities that a student can sign up for. The price of the program is very very reasonable. I hope I have the opportunity to go again someday. 🙂

I had a wonderful four weeks at Tico Lingo in Heredia! The school is quite small and personal with a casual vibe with students from different countries and of different ages. Dani, like everyone else in the school, is always available for any questions and support, both in Spanish and English. The classes were max 5 people and the content of the classes were tailored to the level of the students, and adjusted to our needs and preferences. Classes are very interactive and I never felt embarrassed when I made mistakes (which happened a lot :). In addition my the morning classes with Zaida, I also had individual afternoon classes with Freddy. Both classes complemented each other very well. This is not only a great Spanish school, it also comes with a homestay with a local family! It was a wonderful experience to be welcomed to their house, introduced to family and friends, eat great home cooked food and practice more Spanish! I arrived essentially with very little Spanish from online classes but never actually spoke Spanish with anyone before. After four weeks of this immersion program I think I grasped the basics and am more comfortable having everyday conversations. I would definitely recommend this experience!
