Volunteer in Costa Rica
Make an Impact
Volunteering in Costa Rica gives participants the chance to travel with purpose. It is an opportunity to connect with local communities, strengthen Spanish through real-world interaction, and contribute to projects that support children, students, seniors, rescued animals, and the environment.
Tico Lingo’s volunteer programs are built around meaningful cultural exchange. Each placement allows volunteers to step outside the classroom and engage with the people, organizations, and daily experiences that make Costa Rica such a special place to learn, serve, and grow.
All volunteer projects are located in Heredia and take place in Spanish-speaking community settings. Volunteers live with local homestay families, become part of the Tico Lingo student community, and gain hands-on experience in projects where their time, energy, curiosity, and professional background can make a real difference.
Our volunteer programs are designed for flexible, open-minded participants who are ready to step into real community settings, support local organizations, and help wherever needed. These projects are meaningful, hands-on, and sometimes unpredictable, so the best volunteers are patient, positive, creative, and willing to make the most of each experience.
Volunteers should arrive with a willingness to listen, learn, participate, and support the project in whatever way creates the greatest impact. Some days may be highly structured, while others may require more flexibility, initiative, and patience. That is part of what makes volunteering in a real community setting so valuable.
To participate in a Tico Lingo volunteer program, volunteers must meet the following requirements.
- Be at least 18 years old, or be 16 or 17 years old and traveling with a faculty leader, parent, guardian, or approved group program
- Complete the volunteer application process before arrival
- Sign all required waivers and participation forms
- Have a parent or guardian sign a separate waiver if the participant is under 18
- Provide a background check if volunteering with minors or vulnerable populations
- Be open-minded, respectful, patient, and adaptable
Volunteer programs are available for a minimum of one week, though we recommend two weeks or longer for participants who want a deeper and more meaningful experience.
Most volunteers contribute approximately 3 hours per day, Monday through Friday. Work hours may take place in the morning or afternoon depending on the project schedule and whether the participant is also taking group Spanish classes at Tico Lingo.
Some projects are located within walking distance of the school or homestay area, while others may require a short ride (less than 20 minutes) on public transportation.
Tico Lingo helps coordinate your volunteer placement and prepares you for the experience before your first day. All of our projects include local homestay accommodation. Our team will explain the project, schedule, expectations, and basic logistics so you feel ready to begin.
Depending on the program selected, volunteers may also combine their placement with Spanish classes, cultural activities, and local support from the Tico Lingo team throughout their stay in Heredia.
Volunteer program support includes the following.
- Volunteer placement coordination with a local project in Heredia
- Pre-arrival guidance from the Tico Lingo team
- Project details, schedule, and basic expectations before your arrival
- Support with first-day logistics, including an introduction to the on-site project coordinator and an orientation tour of the project location
- Ongoing local support from the Tico Lingo team during your stay
- Local homestay family accommodation with daily breakfast and dinner
- Option to add Spanish classes before, during, or after the volunteer program
- Option to join Tico Lingo cultural activities, classes, and tours
- Connection to the Tico Lingo student community in Heredia
Volunteering in Costa Rica gives you the chance to experience the country in a deeper, more personal way. Instead of simply passing through as a visitor, you become part of a local project and contribute your time, energy, and care to something meaningful.
It is also one of the best ways to practice Spanish in real life. Volunteers interact with local communities, navigate everyday situations, and build confidence using the language outside the classroom.
Most importantly, volunteering helps create real human connection. Whether you are supporting children, students, seniors, or animals your time can leave a positive impact while giving you a richer understanding of Costa Rican life.
Work with Children in Heredia
Volunteers support local children ages 1 to 8 through play, basic educational activities, arts and crafts, songs, games, and simple classroom support. This project is ideal for volunteers who enjoy working with young children and want to be part of a warm, community-focused learning environment.
By volunteering, participants help create a positive and engaging space where children can learn, play, and feel supported. Their presence gives teachers extra hands in the classroom and helps children receive more personal attention throughout the day.
Teach English at a Local High School in Heredia
In this project, volunteers help grade school or high school students practice English in a fun, relaxed, and supportive environment. Activities may include conversation practice, pronunciation support, classroom games, cultural exchange, small group activities, and interactive lessons that help students feel more comfortable using English.
For Costa Rican students, this is a valuable opportunity to speak with native or fluent English speakers and build confidence through real communication. Volunteers support the classroom experience by encouraging students, helping with activities, assisting teachers when needed, and creating positive moments of cultural exchange.
Volunteer with Seniors 80+
Volunteers spend time with seniors through conversation, games, music, light activities, creative projects, and occasional outings or group trips. The focus is on companionship, connection, and creating joyful moments for older adults in the community.
This project has a meaningful social impact by helping seniors feel seen, valued, and connected. Volunteers bring energy, conversation, and companionship to participants who benefit greatly from regular interaction and shared activities.
Volunteer at a Dog and Cat Rescue Shelter
Volunteers support a local animal rescue shelter by helping care for dogs and cats, assisting with feeding, cleaning, walking, socialization, basic maintenance, and general shelter support. The day-to-day tasks may vary depending on the shelter’s needs.
This project directly supports the wellbeing of rescued animals while helping shelters manage daily care responsibilities. Volunteers provide attention, comfort, and socialization to animals waiting for adoption, making a real difference in their quality of life.
